To funny to pass up!

A 54-year-old woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital.

While on the operating table she had a near death experience.. Seeing God, she asked "Is my time up?"

God said, "No, you have another 43 years, 2 months and 8 days to live."

Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a face-lift, liposuction, breast implants and a tummy tuck.

She even had someone come in and change her hair color and brighten her teeth! Since she had so much more time to live, she figured she might as well make the most of it. After her last operation, she was released from the hospital. While crossing the street on her way home, she was killed by an ambulance.

Arriving in front of God, she demanded, "I thought you said I had another 43 years? Why didn't you pull me from out of the path of the ambulance?"

God replied: " I didn't recognize you."

What is going on with Riley?

November 2, 2010 @ 2:50

No Step! Counts dropping

What is going on? Riley’s WBC is dropping further which has bothered the NY doctors and want to wait to see what is going on. This is surprising at this point. Her WBC remains low enough to put her at risk of infection and fever. So we stayed in NY with hopes of better blood counts today. For some reason her WBC counts are lower than last week and there are some risks with the infusion we didn‘t know about so we are postponing this treatment until her WBC improves (maybe next week).

With her blood counts low, we hung out in the Ronald McDonald house (RMH), but couldn’t get on to the internet in our room until today. For wireless access you have to sign up and give them your email - problem with logic there - how do most get the password on email without internet? Thankfully we have our blackberry but still didn’t get the email until today.

We have stayed at the 2nd oldest RMH and now the current largest RMH. We miss the little cozy RMH in Chicago. This one has 82 rooms and all are cancer patients, but all rooms have TV’s and bathrooms so no one has to share much common space. Maybe the design was to reduce infection potential but seems more like a hotel than the RMH we were used to in Chicago. Anyway, we had a good day of rest.

Right now looking for a way back home tomorrow. Think we’ll go take a walk and learn a little more about this city.

We pray for quick recovery of her WBC’s so she can proceed with this treatment and protection from illness/fever during her recovery.

We have waited before and we must wait now. We will always wait on His plan.

~Update on Riley~

Please keep Riley and her Family in your prayers~

Posted 5 minutes ago  11/1/2010

Riley’s CT scan on Friday showed slight decrease in size of the tumor on the right with further cavitation (tumor cells dying) and the tumor on the left stayed same size but “was almost completely gone due to cavitation.

We give praise for the results although we would love to the words again “all clear.” We prayed for what was needed for His plan to be evident on the scans.

So discussion with doctors at home and NY, we would proceed with the WBC infusion Monday if Riley’s blood counts were recovered well enough from chemo. Surprisingly, Riley’s blood counts hadn’t improved much in a week and was lower than NY had wanted. Finally it was decided, that they may be able to still proceed so we are taking the leap to be in NY today in hopes to start therapy. We will meet with researchers after some more blood tests and decide.

We are on the edge of what we hope is a miracle. A miracle for Riley could lead to a miracle for others too. We open ourselves to His will and pray we will do what is necessary. We pray for her continued recovery from chemo, her cancer to respond miraculously to this new therapy, avoidance of side effects and His glory to be evident to all. Safe travels for us and peace for the kids while we are gone.

Thanks for the prayers and those who are helping while we are gone.

Are you a Frito Lay Fan?

I joined around the first of October. Would you believe they have already sent me a gift?
I received a Frito-Lay red reusable shopping bag, an Eco-friendly water bottle, a chip clip, 3 large bags of chips (Sun Chips, Lightly salted potato chips and Tostitos) and a coupon for another free bag!
Ask me what I have had out of it? My son has taken over the water bottle, him and my mom got into the Tostitos and Sun Chips and 1/2 the bag of the potato chips are gone! Now, my son love all of them but for some reason I think when they come in the mail as a package like they did they must taste much better! You would think I have never bought anything for him.
Here is some information they sent in the package:

Did You Know?

They start with fresh, farm-grown ingredients, making many of their chips with just three simple ingredients: Potatoes or Corn, all natural Oils & Salt.

They were the first major food company to remove partially hydrogenated oils from their cooking oil way back in 2003. That means their chips have 0 grams trans fat because they use all natural oils such as corn oil & sunflower oil.

Most of their chips contain less salt than you think!
Get this...
A 1 0z. serving of Lay's Classic potato chips has about the same amount of sodium as a slice of white bread.

They offer a Lightly Salted line of chips -- available in Lay's & Ruffles potato chips  & Fritos corn chips, which contain 50 percent less sodium than their regular line.

They have also started using all-natural seasonings to flavor some of their potato chips.

Many varieties of their chips provide whole grains like Tostitos snacks,
which contain 8 grams of  whole grain corn per serving, and SunChips,
which brings 18 grams of whole grain per serving!
SunChips are also a good source of fiber!
(I wonder how much fiber CJ got out of that whole bag he ate over the weekend)

If you haven't already join their Fan Club!
Just click on the I love Frito Lay button, enter the info & you are on your way!

Newest Update on Riley

Persistent in Prayer

Posted 20 hours ago

Riley started chemo this past Monday. She was able to continue going to school and then after school each afternoon she went to the hospital for chemo. Once again we are so thankful for God’s protection. She has been without side effect thus far. She will have her last chemo dose tomorrow afternoon. Right now the plan is to repeat her CT scan on Friday 10-29, allow her counts to start recovering, and then head to NY to start immunotherapy. We pray God will keep her free from fevers, infection, and low platelets as her blood counts drop and recover from this chemo course.

We are blessed to have many who have persisted in prayer with us throughout this course. Our Gospel this weekend (Luke 18:1-8) reminded us to never give up in prayer, to be faithful to God that He will answer our prayers, and that His answer will be just for the faithful. We feel this Gospel and homily on the persistence of prayer was a lesson that could have been taken from God’s story of Riley this past 4 ½ years. We have been joined by many (family, close friends, acquaintances, and complete strangers) who have been praying diligently with us for years. We are very thankful for all of these prayers, but God is even more pleased. He rejoices in the masses calling His name in prayer because it is through prayer that we are transformed to holiness and awakened to His constant presence. Riley prays for His presence to be known by all.

We want to thank everyone for all the cards that have been sent to Riley. The support is overwhelming however we want to make sure that everyone knows that her request was never a Make-A-Wish. It was a humble request for cards over a year ago and we do not want to misrepresent Make-A-Wish as they granted us a perfect trip to Disney in 2008. We are very grateful for all the prayers and cards from all over the world - Riley enjoys seeing the many very special cards, but please make sure if you are sending a card or requesting cards to be sent that it is for the right reason. We love sharing God’s story of Riley, but we want the story to be accurate so please feel free to pass on her carepages or caringbridge site information.

As we thank you for your prayers and support we ask you also to pray for a friend. Some of you may remember praying for Dustan in the past. He was diagnosed with a Wilm’s tumor in 2000. In the fall of 2007 he had relapsed for 2nd time and he underwent stem cell transplant. He had complications following his transplant that put him near death several times, however miraculously he survived and was cancer free until scans this past Friday revealed reoccurrence in his kidney bed and his spine. Please pray with us for Dustan and his family.

As we thank you for your prayers we hold on tight to Romans 12:12 - Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persistent in prayer.

Persistent in Prayer, Kirk and Kelly

Please also remember this Friday October 22nd is the 2nd annual Kick Childhood cancer event. Please read below and join us in an evening of fun. THANKS! We look forward to seeing you all there.

Due to weather conditions, the Kick Childhood Cancer Event was postponed until Friday, October 22nd. The ECU Pirates will go up against conference foe UTEP at 7:00 p.m. on that day.

The Kick Childhood Cancer event will start with registration for the 1-mile fun walk at 4:00 p.m. The walk will start at 5:00 p.m., followed by a kids' field day with PeeDee, ECU cheerleaders, and ECU student-athletes. The pink jersey auction will start at 5:30 p.m. The ECU pirates, their coaches and trainer will wear official Nike pink jerseys during their match-up against UTEP. Fans can bid on the jerseys during the game. The starting bid is $20 and bids can be placed in $5 increments. The bidding will end at the close of halftime. At the end of the game, winning bidders will be awarded their jersey by the player or coach who wore the jersey during the game. We hope you will join us on October 22nd for this great event.

To pre-register for the 1-mile fun walk, please visit the following link:

We would appreciate your spreading the word about this change in plans. We are so excited about this event and hope it will be a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of childhood cancer to the community and to celebrate with our Riley's Army family.

Thank you and please feel free to call (252.355.6940) or e-mail me with any questions.

~Breast Cancer Symptoms~

Different people have different warning signs for breast cancer. Some people do not have any signs or symptoms at all. A person may find out they have breast cancer after a routine mammogram.

~Some warning signs of breast cancer are~

New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit).

Thickening or swelling of part of the breast.

Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.

Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast.

Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area.

Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood.

Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.

Pain in any area of the breast.

Keep in mind that some of these warning signs can happen with other conditions that are not cancer.

If you have any signs that worry you, be sure to see your doctor right away

~Newest update on Riley~ Relieved, encouraged, and thankful!

Posted 1 hour ago

We were relieved to find out that this new chemo did more then just cause Riley’s hair to fall out. Scans were not able to detect 4 out of 6 of Riley’s tumors and the remaining 2 tumors have decreased in size. Currently Riley is left with a 12 mm mass in her right lower lung and a 3 mm mass in her left upper lung. We are happy with this improvement which has occurred in only 2 ½ weeks. Our Dr here will be contacting the Drs in NY to see if we should repeat this chemo regimen again before starting immunotherapy, since Riley tolerated it so well and the tumors responded with such a significant decrease in size. We will still need to move forward with the immunotherapy even if scans eventually show complete resolution of disease with chemo, because we know this chemo tends to get response, but it will not get children to cure. However, we are now encouraged to think that immunotherapy may have a better chance of working since Riley’s tumor burden has been decreased with chemo.

We appreciate all your support and prayers and we are thankful that God has given us a result that is encouraging. We needed this positive result to help calm the anxiety and stress that we have felt over the last couple days. Having Riley loose her hair has made our reality visible and obvious again. Although Riley was happy to loose her hair, it has created stress in us and the other children.

I was bathing the children Saturday night and Ella said, “I sure hope this treatment works for Riley because if it doesn’t you know what will happen…” I then said, “I sure hope it works too.” And Riley responded quickly, “Well, either way it will be good.” When I asked Riley what she meant she replied, “Well, Isn’t Heaven good?” Hello, what was I thinking? My, “Yes, but…“ would probably get me into trouble. I try to hand this situation over to God daily, but Riley‘s statement challenges me to hand it over more fully and eagerly. Boy, do I have a lot to work on! I just have to remember that we are here today because this is exactly where God needs us to be to do His work. Sometimes it is in our weakness that His work is best displayed. I pray that God will help us all lay down our stress and anxiety, so that we can do the work He calls us to do. 2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

Relieved, encouraged, and thankful for His power,

Kirk and Kelly

Newest update on Riley

Please pray for this strong amazing family!

When I give updates on Riley I copy directly from her carepage. This is the information directly from her parents, Kirk & Kelly Philpot.

His Plans
Posted 11 hours ago
Almost 7 weeks have passed since we found out that Riley’s cancer returned. Waiting and trying to be patient for the right path for Riley. Some days have passed easily and others have dragged along unable to forget about what she may be facing. All the kids have been enjoying school and enjoyed soccer practice last weekend.
The weeks since scans showing the cancer growing and spreading have been the same, but hard knowing that as well as she appears, her cancer continues to grow.
So as we waited for any news, we found some peace when we were able to let some of “it” go because even if you could pray 24 hours daily you can’t make Him change His plans. Trusting that His plan is the only right plan. We prayed for the path to be so clear that there would be no mistaking it and for angels to block our path if it wasn’t right.
We received word the FDA approved the immunotherapy Friday (Using Riley and Ella’s WBC’s to attack a specific marker on her tumors). They reviewed her scans and called Tuesday to let us know the surgeon in NY did not want to do surgery but they could give her infusions anyway. We questioned not doing surgery since it was in their original plan to reduce the amount of cancer the WBC’s would have to fight. They left the decision to us to proceed with surgery here if we wanted and have the infusion done later in NY. So last night we prayed and prayed for the answer. We told Riley she might be facing surgery again and asked that she pray for the best answer. Our surgeons here are reviewing her scans tomorrow.
When she got up today, I asked if she had prayed and she answered “Yes.” Impatiently I asked if she had an answer and she replied “Not yet, He has a lot of other people all over the world to take care of you know.” In her perfect patience, she went off to school.
So how shocked are we when doctors in NY called back today just before noon and said they don’t want to wait for her to have surgery and to be in NY at 7:30 am tomorrow for tests and to have the first infusion! Now that is clear and He must have sent an army of angels to block our other paths.
So pray for safe travel through the night. Of course the best news would be that no cancer is found on tests tomorrow, but we accept His will and are following the path as quickly as we can. Pray for the infusion of WBC’s to attack all the cancer and show His mighty power.
We will likely be headed back to NC on Friday, but Riley will need to go to NY each week for infusions. Tentative plans for scans again in 3 weeks and surgery then based on the results.
We travel tonight, on this path, amazed at His mighty power and His plan. Rejoice in Him.
Kirk & Kelly
And for those who want to know about cards, we are blessed by all the cards we have received (at least 40,000 in the past year). We have some friends currently helping us get through the mail. We have learned to accept that no matter how her simple request turned into something more (and not entirely true in the emails)it is still His plan to draw people to her story (and His story). Riley enjoys each card as she realizes it reprents prayer. All that we ask is that people understand the truth behind the request. We don't want people with great intentions being mislead. And if your wondering, the world recored was 33 million cards and we wouldn't even want to think about thhat (and Guinness doesn't allow that record attempt anymore when they realized how out of hand it became.)

Our days have been passing quickly and thankfully Riley continues to feel good. The kids have started back to school which has added additional stress to our household. Earlier bedtimes, hectic mornings, and busy afternoons are hampering our ability to play, relax, and just enjoy the kids, but on the other hand we are thrilled to still be in the normal routines of life despite our not so normal situation. What a balancing act of trying to act normal to fit in, yet being unable to ignore the facts that are staring us in the face so we can best prepare ourselves, our family, and our relationships for what may be the hardest time of our lives. In preparing our relationships we have many to consider and several that are crucial to preserve. So we pray that God will remain visible to us and that we are able to continue raising our hands to Him in praise and thanksgiving for the wonderful things He will craft from this situation.

We tried to update a couple of times, but our hearts ached so much that we would have only caused pain in others. We know others hurt with us, and spilling out our pain and sadness would not have helped anyone.

As others move on, the odd circumstances of our life are magnified. Thoughts of anything else are difficult for us as our minds are flooded with emotion but oddly many at the same time - hope, sadness, belief, doubt, anger, joy. We are overwhelmed as we cannot stop what is happening and it often seems unreal. We wish it were not real, however we don’t know His plan or what is to come, so we yield to His plan knowing that only He can master all the details to get us where we need to be for all of eternity.

Many try to encourage us with “don’t give up hope”. You do not need to fear us giving up hope, yet I think there are two types of hope. Hope for Life here and Hope for Life eternal. We do struggle to keep hope for “here” strong, but our hope for eternity is our anchor to Him. The latter is the type that was given by Christ and can never be taken away. We don’t want to bypass our hope for life here nor do we want to jump straight to our hope for eternity since Riley is still feeling well and we still hope for her to be healed here on earth. Even though Hope Eternal will sustain us for our life here, it doesn’t protect us from heartache. We don’t fear for our loved ones that will go home to Him, but fear the pain of living here without them.

So we pray for peace and for acceptance of His will. We pray for peace for you also. Riley’s concerns so deeply affect many and create some of the same feelings we have in others. We hope you too can work toward letting go of your hurt, fear or anger. Let Him help you so you can help us and others and we will pray for the same.

Riley had a follow up scan done Wednesday which showed that tumor in the right lung has grown significantly and 3 new tumors are now confirmed. We were not medically surprised yet we were disappointed to see such a drastic change in such a short period of time. Riley was not surprised either to hear that her disease had progressed. She told us weeks ago she felt there would be nothing to do and then again nothing to do, however she followed with, “Then when my cancer is gone you and Dad will write about it on carepages and show His mighty power!” Our hearts hope too, but how? We pray His mighty power will be very clear for us all to see.

For Riley, medically there is very little that is proven to “help” and nothing left that can cure her. Our efforts for quantity could rob us of quality. Who do we make our choices for - Riley, ourselves or God? The way is not yet clear, but we must do what is best for Him, then Riley, and finally ourselves. We hope a choice exists that can please us all.

The only option we seem to be pursuing right now is the possibility of immunotherapy, yet that is unproven and even untested in a Wilm’s patient. Seems right up there with something God might like us to try since it has been so perfectly laid out for only Riley! As for the immunotherapy (a targeted White Blood Cell line against the protein expressed on Riley’s tumor) the physician in NY has submitted a petition to the FDA to ask for approval to use Ella’s white blood cell line for Riley. It is unusual to have a sibling with such a close immunity that this could even be possible, but Riley and Ella are nearly identical matches. I hold out hope that they match for a reason and that God doesn’t make mistakes. If the FDA approves the trial, Riley may need to face another lung surgery in hopes to remove as much cancer as possible to give the immunotherapy the best chance to work. So that puts us right back to our concern of causing her more problems than benefit as now she would be facing open lung surgery on both sides if that is even possible based on her latest CT scan.

So we give it up to God and His mighty power to decide our path. We ask that you pray for the way to be clear and to accomplish His will. We hope to hear the FDA’s response in the next week. Please pray that this path opens up smoothly if it is the Will of God.

We hold on to God and we continue to hope, yet we are very sad and hope His peace can help us face our reality. On the other hand Riley remains steady and calm. We thank Him for her peace. We rejoice in Him that she can enjoy each day unaffected by the surrounding world and her own concerns. Spending time with her can bring such peace that we don’t want her to leave us - I can only imagine how great it will feel to be with Him someday.

In closing, we hope God’s story of Riley will be yet another amazing story about the perfect Love of God.

John 9:1-3. As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.”

Only He knows how He plans to ultimately show his work, but we trust everything has happened for that purpose and hope we can do all He expects of us as her thankful parents here on earth.

Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, and persevere in prayer. Romans 12:12. We are persevering in prayer and we are thankful for all who pray with us. We are blessed to have a pastor from New Hope Free Will Baptist Church in Clayton NC who has felt called to organize an event allowing many churches and believers to come together and pray for and with Riley on Saturday Sept 4th at 11 am. If anyone wants to join us in prayer please feel free to join us on Saturday at New Hope Free Will Baptist Church 700 Stallings St in Clayton, NC 27520. From what we hear there may be several free will bikers coming in from Greenville SC. So hop on your Harley or jump in your minivan to join us if you can.

Holding our hands up to Him, Kirk & Kelly

Prayers Needed for Riley and her Family

Please keep the Philpot Faily in your prayers. Here is the latest information I have received. This is taken from the for Riley Philpot.

A New Journey

Posted 1 day ago

We praise God for his presence AND our hearts are aching.

I was going to say “for His presence BUT our …” but the above statement says it better for me. Nothing that we have heard changes the fact that He is with us, and how we feel does not change how great He is. So we are thankful and sad.
As many would have expected with our delay in updating, we have gotten news that has taken us time to process. Riley’s cancer has returned in her right lung and likely in her left lung as well.

We knew the moment the doctor called us out of Riley’s room to “talk” with us. The blunt facts are that we have already tried everything for Riley that could have cured her. There is no treatment that can achieve a cure. The initial recommendation by the doctor was to remove the nodule in the right lung. “But why?” could not be answered, especially when the cancer has returned so quickly and that we are facing the probability that it has already spread to the left lung.
What do we want to do? This is what our heart must decide. We can’t medically have what we really want. We met with another oncologist about a treatment plan. She agrees that we have done everything possible that could have cured Riley. Surgery, a new chemo regimen and/or experimental treatments are treatment options. None of the options discussed would provide a lasting effect and would have side effects even if considered “very well tolerated.” Another treatment option is to wait for a while to make a decision knowing that no further treatment may be the best for Riley and our family.

We had planned a crazy road trip to see family after our expected good news. We wanted to return home after the news was not what we wanted, but Riley and the kids wanted to continue with our drive. So now we rest in Iowa with plans to travel back home over the next week, stopping and visiting folks along the way.

We will be able to share more later, but we must find the best option for Riley and our family. Right now we have to rest. God is with us today as much as He was before we heard the news. Riley feels great. She and all the kids know the news and are aware of its meaning. They are all handling it in their own way. Riley and we are admittedly scared, but hopefully we can better understand her fears as the days move on.We continue to praise God and give Him all the glory for He alone can make good out of this not so good situation.
In our weakness we allow Him to hold on tight to us,

Kirk and Kelly
